Based on Hey's
carefully kept fishing diaries, recording happy days on rivers, lakes and
estuaries in different parts of South Africa over a period of fifty years. Hey
had the unique opportunity of visiting all the worthwhile waters as author of
several government Blue Books on inland fisheries. Hey grew up in the Border
region and started work at the Department of Post and Telegraphs as a teenager.
He worked in the Department for the next 47 years, enjoying postings all over
South Africa (always close to good fishing spots!). In 1925, the Union
Government initiated a survey of all inland waters and Hey was appointed to
fulfil the task, despite his lack of formal scientific training. He described
every river, stream and vlei in South Africa and as a result the government was
able to stock rivers and dams with fish in a more efficient manner. "If
you only ever collect one [fishing] book, let it be RAPTURE OF THE RIVER. There
will never be another that sums up the soul of South African fly fishing as
brilliantly". Paul Curtis FISHING THE MARGINS, p. 113.

A large part of modern
Cape Town, the "Foreshore" was reclaimed from the sea during and
after World War II. This book demonstrates the magnitude of the task
undertaken. The Foreshore plan altered the face of Cape Town forever and
allowed the city to expand. Sixty years later, it is interesting to compare the
end result with the suggested proposals.

Cape colonial
farmsteads built in the later eighteenth through to the early nineteenth
centuries are a major tourist attraction in an area known as the Cape winelands.
Who were the people who built these houses? When and why did this unique style
of architecture emerge in a colony of impoverished, semi-literate, European
immigrants? And why, of all the Dutch colonies in various parts of the world,
did it emerge only at the Cape? These are the main questions addressed by the
author.

In mid-1942, when Nazi
darkness was overwhelming the British Empire, U-boats sank 46 vessels off the
Cape of Good Hope and in the Indian Ocean. The U-boats were directed from a
transmitter aboard a German ship which sought shelter in the neutral Portuguese
enclave of Goa, 400 miles south of then Bombay. British forces could not
intervene. In Calcutta, civilian merchants, bankers, lawyers and accountants
belonged to a part-time territorial unit, the Calcutta Light Horse, which was
established because they enjoyed riding and racing. At their own expense and
acting independently, fourteen members of the unit stopped further transmission
of radio messages.

politics and the people he encountered and thus allows us a glimpse of those
who inhabited what was one of the most isolated parts of South Africa.

Molteno was the son of
the first Prime Minister of the Cape Colony (1872-8), John Molteno. He was a
staunch advocate of colonial self government, and believed there should be
closer union between the English and Dutch inhabitants of South Africa. He was
making this argument as the winds of war began to gather in southern Africa. He
points out that the problem was not racial (relating to language groups), but
political.

Led by Prof. F.R.
Tomlinson, the Commission submitted its report on 1 October 1954. It comprised
3755 pages, 598 tables and 66 large maps. It was decided that it would be too
expensive and too unwieldy to reproduce for the interested reader, and so the
Commission was asked to produce a summary along with the final edited version
of the Report. This item is the summary of the Commission's line of thought,
and includes their unabridged findings and recommendations. The Tomlinson
Commission formed the basis for the eventual "Homeland" system. The
Commission recommended the attracting of industrialists to those areas and the
stimulation of agriculture to keep farmers and their families in the homelands.
The Report is one of the most important produced in South Africa in the 20th
century. The Commission was tasked to answer one question: should development
be separate, or should there be integration of the races? Taking all factors into consideration, the
Commission recommended the latter choice, namely, that of separate
development p. 207. Thus was South Africa's
path determined.

The strength of South
African rugby over the decades has stemmed from the rugby played in South
African schools. This book provides evidence of the breadth and depth of that
strength. Schools covered stretch from Cape Town to Durban and from Tzaneen to
Upington. Rugby at schools is not confined to traditional "white"
schools, but has a huge following from all races. The focus is on the
"big" games between traditional rivals (some of which draw crowds in
excess of 10 000) In his impressive foreword, Francois Pienaar reminds South
Africans of the discipline that is required to succeed at rugby, the support
and involvement of the community, and the values the game teaches. The book
celebrates the spirit of the Derby Day.

The subjects include
conversations around farming, the village, home and boarding-house, at the

In the 1960s and 70s, adult comic books stories were very
popular. Series such as The GRENSVEGTER (Border fighter); WIT TIER (White
Tiger) and KAPTEIN DUIWEL (Captain Devil) were well received. The action moved
forward through a combination of still photographs, speech bubbles and
captions. The themes were similar: heroic (white) South African takes on
"baddies" (Cubans, freedom fighters, Arabs) and after struggling
against overwhelming odds, frequently includung capture, he escapes, saves the
mini-skirted girl, and the RSA! The many scenes ostensibly portraying Central
Africa / Sahara, etc, look remarkably like the Highveld near Brakpan! Dated as
these items now appear, their role in forming opinions amongst their readership
cannot be underestimated.

Bouwer, a young
official of the Transvaal Republic, joined the commandos as a 23 year-old
burgher, and returned to Pretoria three years later as a Boer general. He took
part in the battles at Colenso, Spioenkop and Peter's Hill, and later
participated in the raid into the Cape Colony. He also writes along more human
interest lines, for example about the fugitive women laagers, girl commandos,
spies and traitors who were shot, and gives insights into some of the other
Boer generals.

Pict. cloth, faded on spine, with cellotape repairs to spines. Inscription from "the publisher", dated 1909, on front free endpaper of vol. 1. R 4500
Shackleton’s first Antarctic
expedition aimed to reach the South Pole, plant a flag at the South Magnetic
Pole and explore the Ross Barrier. Although the later two aims were achieved,
Shackleton was forced to turn back, 97 miles from the South Pole, a decision
regarded as one of the bravest and most correct ever reached in such adverse
conditions. Shackleton summarises his achievement in the preface: "In the
spring and summer of 1908-9 three sledging parties left winter quarters; one
went south and attained the most southerly latitude ever reached by man, [and]
another reached the South Magnetic Pole for the first time." In his
introduction, H.R. Mill records, "how the enthusiasm and devotion of an
individual has once more vindicated the character of the British nation for
going far and faring well in the face of difficulties before which it would
have been no dishonour to turn back."
