The book brings together documents created by Nelson Mandela whilst in prison on Robben Island; and documents created by those in contact with him: official, unofficial and personal. The book also collates photographs and other memorabilia relating to this time. The documents show Nelson Mandela's incarceration from a very different angle. " 'A garden was one of the few things in prison that one could control' wrote Mandela. Much of his correspondence with the authorities reveals the adroit ways in which he extended his influence from the tiny patch of soil in the corner of a courtyard to the entire prison, the inmates and the warders, his many connections beyond the prison walls, the apartheid state, and ultimately the world." p. 205.

He was largely self-educated, could speak eight languages, and was widely travelled. He became a political journalist and was a founder member of the African Native National Congress, becoming the organization’s first Secretary-General in 1912. MHUDI was the first novel written in English by a black African. The story concerns Mzilikazi's routing of the Baralong, during the ferment of the 1830s. Mhudi and her husband Ra-Thaga are present when the Baralong form an alliance with the Boer frontiersmen of the Great Trek, resulting in the Battle of Vegkop, under the tail of Hailey's Comet. Among his other works was NATIVE LIFE IN SOUTH AFRICA (a plea against the Land Act of 1913, which he believed would cause great damage to race relations) and Shakespearean works which he translated into SeTswana. He was strongly opposed to tribalism and exemplified the spirit of national unity among African intellectuals. The Kimberley municipal district has been named the Sol Plaatje Municipality. 43 p.: ill., maps, advertisements. Stiff paper wraps. R 150
A comparison of this map book with modern equivalents will show the expansion and population densification of Cape Town over the last few decades. There are numerous advertisements for popular attractions of the time: e.g. Safariland Lion & Game Park and department stores such as John Orr's clothing shop. Neumann Furs offered "ready to wear fur models" and "scientific atomizer cleaning & rejuventating" for older furs. An advertisement indicates that bed and breakfast in the Green Park Hotel cost R4.50 (or R5.50 with a private bath). Surprisingly, the majority of advertisers are no longer in business.

220 p.: ill., ports., maps on endpapers. Paper covered boards, d.w. R 300
From his perspective in a British tank regiment, Robert Crisp, D.S.O., M.C. (1911-1994) provides an interesting and lively account of the disastrous Greek Campaign. He was a South African cricketer and played nine tests for his country. He was an adventurer all his life, and after the war became a journalist. He was part of the team that set up DRUM magazine, and wrote two books whilst working on the EAST ANGLIAN DAILY TIMES. They are classic, hard-hitting accounts of the war as he saw it. This account follows his, and the Allied Army's, constant retreat from northern Greece in the face of overwhelming Axis power. In the course of the war, Crisp lost six tanks, was mentioned in despatches four times and after being invalided out of Normandy, met the King, who, knowing who he was, asked if his bowling would be affected. "No Sire" he is alleged to have replied "I was hit in the head".

The United Nations had brokered a peaceful settlement for Namibia and 1 April 1989 was meant to be the first day of peace after 23 years of conflict. However, on the night of 31 March, 1600 SWAPO fighters crossed the borderline. The SA troops had withdrawn to their camps as part of the peace agreement and for nine days 1200 members of Koevoet, the SWA territory police (minus their heavier weapons which had been handed in as part of the agreement) fought the SWAPO members who had crossed the border. This poorly bound book is most often found to have fallen apart. See illustration.

Patterson was called in to kill the lions that had brought the construction of the railway at Tsavo to a halt. The lions had killed some members of the workforce and were terrorising the rest. One can understand their fear since one of the man-eaters killed and photographed was a beast of enormous proportions. Their ability to avoid capture had led to the belief among the workforce that they were really evil spirits.

Horsbrugh (1871-1916) was born in Poona and entered the military after Wellington College and Sandhurst. He saw service in Sierra Leone and the South African War. During the war and on his return for further service in the Orange River Colony, Horsbrugh became an expert on South African birdlife. He left South Africa for the last time in 1909 and retired from the army at forty. He purchased a farm in England, where he collected waterfowl and took a keen interest in all forms of ornithological life. On the outbreak of WWI, he rejoined the military, saw action and was invalided home. He died aged forty-five, after an operation. It was Horsburgh who employed Sgt. Claude Gibney Davies to complete the illustrations for his book, thus ensuring Davies' recognition as one of the most talented of the ornithological artists. In the preface, Horsburgh praises Davies and also refers to the field-work he contributed. Originally published in 4 parts from March to December 1912.

The cornerstone of any collection of South African botanical books. Marloth (1855-1931) was a chemist and amateur botanist. He studied pharmacy in Germany before moving to the Cape in 1883, where he opened a practice. In 1888 he accepted a post at the Victoria College and later lectured at Elsenburg Agricultural College. He spent all his spare time on botanical pursuits and collecting specimens in the Western Cape mountains. He also made collecting trips into the interior. THE FLORA... was commissioned by Lady Phillips and crowned his life's work. Marloth died before the final volumes of this monumental work could be published. Vol. 1. contains biographies of various botanists. Vol. 1 & 4 were published in 1913 & 1915, vol. 2 in 1925 and vol. 3 in 1932, as the required illustrations became available. Anna Smith suggests that a fire in the printing house destroyed some of the pictures, thus reducing the number of completed copies. See AFRICANA BYWAYS, p. 81. See also S.A.B. vol. 3, p. 26.
