Forbes was a careful researcher and lectured at Rhodes and Cape Town universities. Amongst the travellers dealt with are Beutler, Thunberg, Sparrmann and Barrow. An important contribution to our knowledge of these travellers.

Alexander left Cape Town in 1836, and travelled the regions mentioned by means of ox-wagon. He obtained a good collection of zoological and other specimens, many unknown to the scientific world at the time. He also gives an account of the social condition of the Namaquas, Bushmen and Damaras and disagrees with the mission practise of educating the local people in the Dutch language. The Carnegie Commission arose out of a visit by the President and Secretary of the Carnegie Corporation of New York to South Africa in 1927.The Dutch Reformed Church requested support for an investigation into the "poor white" question. The Corporation agreed and took responsibility for the costs involved as well as arranging for two American sociologists to participate in the study.

Mendelssohn, a diamond dealer, accumulated an extensive Africana library, which he left to South Africa (today it forms the basis of the Library of Parliament). Gibson was a Lieutenant and Intelligence Officer of the 1st I.L.H. The regiment was formed at the start of the war, and included amongst its officers ten members of the Reform Committee. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick and Sir Lionel Phillips and others made large financial contributions to enable one thousand men to be mounted and equipped. Five thousand men volunteered, and five hundred were initially accepted, having been rigorously tested for horsemanship, marksmanship, physique and character. The regiment saw action at the Battles of Elandslaagte, Wagon Hill, Colenso and Spion Kop,  was present at the Reliefs of Ladysmith and Mafeking, amongst other notable events of the war.

Wallace was a newspaper correspondent during the South African War, scooping the details of the Peace Treaty for his employers, the DAILY MAIL, London. He writes about war and peace, life on the veld, and the cities and dorps of South Africa at the turn of the previous century.
