Alexander left Cape
Town in 1836, and travelled the regions mentioned by means of ox-wagon. He
obtained a good collection of zoological and other specimens, many unknown to
the scientific world at the time. He also gives an account of the social
condition of the Namaquas, Bushmen and Damaras and disagrees with the mission
practise of educating the local people in the Dutch language. See Mendelssohn,
vol. 1, p. 20-21.

Commission arose out of a visit by the President and Secretary of the Carnegie
Corporation of New York to South Africa in 1927.The Dutch Reformed Church
requested support for an investigation into the "poor white"
question. The Corporation agreed and took responsibility for the costs involved
as well as arranging for two American sociologists to participate in the study.

living in England, was charged by the French government to carry out an
expedition for scientific purposes. "Four different zones of exploration
were traversed, i.e., South Africa, Nyassland, Tanganyika and Equatorial zones,

stretch from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. . . a valuable account of the
religion, customs, and superstitions of the people, with a description of
Victoria Falls." The appendix contains a vocabulary in Kiswahili,

Gibson was a
Lieutenant and Intelligence Officer of the 1st I.L.H. The regiment was formed
at the start of the war, and included amongst its officers ten members of the
Reform Committee. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick and Sir Lionel Phillips and others made
large financial contributions to enable one thousand men to be mounted and
equipped. Five thousand men volunteered, and five hundred were initially
accepted, having been rigorously tested for horsemanship, marksmanship,
physique and character. The regiment saw action at the Battles of Elandslaagte,
Wagon Hill, Colenso and Spion Kop, was
present at the Reliefs of Ladysmith and Mafeking, amongst other notable events
of the war.

Germany) had been in South Africa for barely a year when the war started. He
joined the Boer forces and was captured at Mafeking a few months later and sent
to St Helena. During the two and a half years he spent on the island, he
sketched and painted the prisoners of war and their daily lives. A superb
