Le Vaillant (1753-1824) was a traveller, ornithologist, artist and writer. His TRAVELS provides an interesting account of South Africa at a time when relatively little was known regarding its natural history and the Dutch settlers, valuable less for its geographical information than for its addition to the knowledge of the natural history of the area. Sunter made a presentation to the National Party cabinet prior to the negotiated settlement. A remarkably perceptive book.

Arends assisted Guy Shortridge in collecting specimens of African mammals for the Kaffrarian Museum in King William's Town during the years 1922-1947. Shortridge also contributed specimens to the British Museum and the New York Museum of Natural History. He is also known for the standard work MAMMALS OF SOUTH WEST AFRICA. In their quest to supply museums across the world with these specimens, they contributed to the decline of the very wildlife they were trying to understand! Surely by the 1940s it was unnecessary to shoot lions and trap leopards for museums in America? Even the rare riverine rabbit was not spared their collecting mania.

THE SIEGE OF MAFEKING / edited by Iain R. Smith. Standard ed. Johannesburg: Brenthurst Press, May 2001. 2 vols. (264; 304 p.): ill. (Brenthurst Press. Third series; vols. 3 & 4). 4to. Cloth, d.w.s. T.e.g., head and tail bands. Edition limited to 850 copies. R1 950 (incl. VAT)

Published to mark the centenary of the South African War, 1899-1902, South African and British authors review collective and individual experiences of the siege and the interpretation of its various aspects. Among other sources, they have consulted a major manuscript collection in the Brenthurst Library: the archive of Lieutenant-Colonel Courtney Vyvyan (Baden-Powell's second-in-command). Many illustrations from original pictorial material are included.

The seven-month-long siege (October 1899 - May 1900) became one of the most famous episodes of the war, and the fate of the town assumed a symbolic importance for Britain and the Empire.

During the ensuing century the conduct of the garrison and its commanding officer, Colonel Robert Baden-Powell, has evoked widely divergent reactions.
