CALENDAR. Facsimile reprint. Cape
Town: South African Library, 1970-1988.
25
vols. (Cape Almanac series). Paper
covered boards, some volumes faded on spine. Contents: Volumes for the years: 1801-2, 1804-12, 1814, 1816, 1818-1829. R 350
The CAPE ALMANACS
began in 1801 with the handwritten AFRICAN COURT CALENDAR. This was followed by
the AFRICAN ALMANAC of 1802, printed by Harry Harwood Smith. There is no known
volume for 1803. In 1804 ALMANAK VOOR DE KAAP DE GOEDE HOOP was published. In
1805 and 1806 the title became LYST VAN ALLE COLLEGIAN. With the second British
occupation, the name reverted in 1807 to AFRICAN COURT CALENDAR, which it remained
up to 1827. The early almanacs contained
lists of colonial officials and military personnel, as well as astronomical
data, local regulations and shipping movements. From 1809 a directory of
merchants was included, and from 1810 a general directory of Cape Town. A
valuable reference tool.

Sunter was
commissioned by the Anglo American Corporation in the early 1980s to prepare
various scenarios that could apply to South Africa. Out of this research came
the concept of the "high road" or "low road" options for

evoked enormous response. Sunter made a presentation to the National Party
cabinet prior to the negotiated settlement. A remarkably perceptive book.

The Strydoms were in a
group of tourists taken hostage from the island of Sibadan by Abu Saiyyaf
rebels. They were held captive for over 4 months, and their ordeal and eventual
release captured the imagination of many South Africans.

The Gorongosa Game
Reserve in Mozambique became a National Park in 1948. Lecanides describes a
safari in the Reserve and his camps along the Zambezi prior to this period. He
notes the dire need for stricter administration of the game laws as the
denuding of the area of game became evident. He makes the pertinent point that
it was the advent of motorised transport that made the wholesale destruction of
game possible, as weekend hunting safaris became accessible to many. Includes
notes on the Gorongoza Game Reserve and the big game of Manica and Sofala.

is also known for the standard work MAMMALS OF SOUTH WEST AFRICA. In their
quest to supply museums across the world with these specimens, they contributed
to the decline of the very wildlife they were trying to understand! Surely by
the 1940s it was unnecessary to shoot lions and trap leopards for museums in
America? Even the rare riverine rabbit was not spared their collecting mania.

Kruger died in Clarens
on 14 July 1904 and his body was temporarily kept in Holland before being
returned to Cape Town by special boat. His body was then taken to Pretoria
where he was buried with considerable pomp and ceremony on 16 December 1904
(the anniversary of the Battle of Blood River). The funeral was organised, with
Milner's permission, by leading Boer figures and some would trace the upsurge
in Afrikaner reawakening to this event.

President M.T. Steyn
had to issue this proclamation on Monday 19 March 1900, indicating that,
notwithstanding Lord Roberts's proclamation after the capture of Bloemfontein
on 13 March, the OFS was still at war and the burghers were obliged to continue
the fight. Those who did not would be committing treason.

Published to
mark the centenary of the South African War, 1899-1902, South African and
British authors review collective and individual experiences of the siege and
the interpretation of its various aspects. Among other sources, they have
consulted a major manuscript collection in the Brenthurst Library: the archive
of Lieutenant-Colonel Courtney Vyvyan (Baden-Powell's second-in-command). Many
illustrations from original pictorial material are included.
The
seven-month-long siege (October 1899 - May 1900) became one of the most famous
episodes of the war, and the fate of the town assumed a symbolic importance for
Britain and the Empire.
During the
ensuing century the conduct of the garrison and its commanding officer, Colonel
Robert Baden-Powell, has evoked widely divergent reactions.
