Very rarely seen. Dr Boeseken worked for many years in the State Archives and her great knowledge of the Dutch, the VOC and early Cape History enabled her to produce a number of books on the early settlement of the Cape. Her careful annotation of these documents (which start with instructions given to Jan van Riebeeck) show important milestones in South African and Cape history. It is regrettable that the State Archives discontinued this series as it contributed to a better understanding of a period about which relatively little is now written.

39 p. Stiff paper covers. Originally published in 1803.                          300

Pallandt was on the personal staff of General Janssens. The original pamphlet was printed at the Cape in June 1803. Fifty copies were run off the Government Press in Cape Town whilst Janssens was touring the interior. The new Dutch government was unhappy about the contents and 38 copies were recovered and destroyed. Pallandt had sent 6 copies overseas and 2 more copies were seized off the ship Spion in Table Bay. Only 4 copies were lost. Pallandt, with family influence, was quickly allowed to leave the Cape and no further action was taken against him. Only 1 copy of the original work is held in SA. The pamphlet is a superb overview of the problems that faced those ruling the Cape and SA for the next 100 years. He also clearly sets out the frontier disputes that had previously arisen and the mentality that governed on both sides of the frontier divide. He also discloses views ahead of the time: "the natives are set to do the hardest tasks in the Colony without, however, receiving from their masters proportional payment…” (p. 24). He also proposed that rather than building castles on the coastline, a motivated population who loved the country, both black & white settlers, in the interior and exploiting the habitat they knew well would "… arrest the progress of the enemy" (p. 28) in the event of an attack. He concluded that factors at the Cape would have to undergo fundamental change for the Cape to become an asset to Holland. An interesting item.

The withdrawal of the Portuguese from Angola in 1974 left a power vacuum which was filled by three Angolan forces: MPLA, FNLA and  UNITA. South Africa forces, in an attempt to secure the northern border of (then) SWA pushed deep into Angola in 1975. Operation Savannah lasted until March 1976, when SA forces had to withdraw. During Operation Savannah, SA soldiers had heavy censorship imposed on them and local SA newspapers were not allowed to carry detailed reports of the fighting, although international papers did. Savannah convinced the Botha government of the need to improve SA armaments and ushered in a period of intense military growth. This enabled the SADF to fight longer and more intense battles in Southern Angola in 1978 (operations Reindeer, Revenge & Sceptic) and during the 1980's. It also taught the SADF hierachy not to trust the politicians who they felt had bowed to international pressure. Savannah was controversial in SA (35 SADF soldiers were killed) and in an attempt to allay fears, the Defence Force commissioned two histories via the shadowy Brigadier Willem Otto, head of the Military Information Bureau. Both were produced in Afrikaans. This work and  OPERASIE SAVANNAH by Prof. S.B. Spies are seldom seen now.

"...maps the valiant efforts of the first railway company to establish an extensive railway network in an isolated country in Africa. At the close of the nineteenth century when the Boers of the 'Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek' (ZAR) were still living in a pre-industrial timeframe and had never seen a train, a railway company, the 'Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg Maatschappij' (NZASM), laid the foundation of a modern transport system. Together with the gold-mining industry in the Eastern Transvaal and on the Witwatersrand the railways inaugurated the industrial revolution in a country managed by an agrarian people.'  Flyleaf.

xix, 294 p. Original cloth with gilding, some scarring. Spotting on page edges but not interfering with text. Some pages roughly opened. Bears bookplate of Julius Jeppe.   R 20 000

Only 750 copies were printed at Haggard’s expense. Trubner was unhappy when after 2 years only 154 had been sold! When Haggard’s very successful KING SOLOMON’S MINES was published in 1885, interest was revived and eventually all the copies sold. Haggard had been sent to South Africa by his father in order to distance him from a lady friend. He held an official position in the Transvaal during the first annexation. The book provides an overview of events in South Africa in the period 1875-82. See Mendelssohn. Vol. 1, p. 663-4. Julius Jeppe, 1859-1929, was a Transvaal mining and property magnate. He first mined on land in the vicinity of present day Commissioner Street, but when that proved unprofitable, turned it into township lots, thus starting the city of Johannesburg.

One of the most important publications to challenge apartheid. This publication came out during the height of opposition to apartheid and two years before the second state of Emergency. Hans Heese drew on the substantial body of genealogical literature that had grown up around the well kept archives of the N.G. Church (of which his father, J.A. Heese, was archivist). Heese did not reveal anything new, but what he did was to set out plainly (names and dates) when intermarriages had taken place between black and white at the Cape. The reaction to his book was emotional in some quarters and legal threats and worse were aimed at him. Of particular note was that one of the ancestors of Ds. Andries Treurnicht (leader of the Conservative Party which opposed any liberalisation of government policies) was named in the book as having married "Victoria van die Kaap". Jan Hoon, Conservative MP for Kuruman and one of the most implacable opponents of liberalism in South Africa, publically announced his intention to sue Heese. Heese invited Hoon to meet him in the Cape Archives and look at the records with him. The case never came to court! This book shook the foundation of one of the basic tenets upon which apartheid was founded. This slim paperback is scarce in this condition.

A work of great breadth. Over a long period, Skead collated records pertaining to animals in specific areas. He attempted to ascertain which animals were prevalent (and in what numbers) in each area when first described by early travellers and inhabitants, and how the presence of humans altered the figures over time. He has culled the literature for the tiniest reference to even the tiniest mammal! He often needed to decipher the descriptions that were given by the early travellers as they were often contradictory or in terms they could relate to: e.g. "dassies" were sometimes described as "rabbits".

PROCLAMATIONS of the SOUTH AFRICAN WAR, 1899-1902

300     Roberts, Field Marshal, Lord Frederick Sleigh. PROCLAMATION!: In future no persons are to be allowed to ride, except officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the Imperial Army, and those connected with it. Those transgressing this rule are to have their horses confiscated. Given under my hand at Bloemfontein this 30th day of April, 1900. Roberts, Field Marshal.

Bloemfontien: Curling Printer, 1900. One leaf, 28 x 44 cm. Frayed and browned along edges, with neat repair to tear along fold line and top right corner. Text repeated in Dutch. Coat of arms and "V.R." at head of text.                                                                                  R 3500

An attempt taken by Roberts to curtail the mobility of Boer forces.

301     Roberts, Field Marshal, Lord Frederick Sleigh. PROCLAMATION: Whereas small parties of raiders have recently been doing wanton damage to public property in the Orange River Colony and South African Republic by destroying railway bridges and culverts and cutting the telegraph wires, and whereas such damage cannot be done without the knowledge and connivance of the neighbouring inhabitants, and the principal civil residents in the district corcerned [sic], Now therefore I, Frederick Sleigh, Baron Roberts of Kandahar and Waterford, K.P., G.C.B., G.C.S.I, G.C.I.E., V.C., Field Marshal, Commanding in Chief Her Majesty's Troops in South Africa, warn the said inhabitants and principal civil residents that, whenever public property is destroyed or injured in the manner specified above, they will be held responsible for aiding and abetting the offenders. The houses in the vicinity of the place where the damage is done will be burnt, and the principal civil residents will be made prisoners of war. Roberts, F.M. Commanding in Chief, South Africa.

Army Head Quarters, South Africa, Pretoria, 16th June, 1900. One leaf, 25,5 x 36,5 cm. Frayed and browned along edges, with some slight spotting on edges and a foldline just off centre. Coat of arms and "V.R." at head of text.                                                            R 7500

A turning point in the South African War. On 14 June 1900, F.M. Roberts had signalled to Kitchener (who was at Koppies in the OFS) that he must "…put a stop to these raids on our railway and telegraph lines…" He suggested commencing by burning De Wet's farm near Rhenoster. Two days later this policy was formalised in this Proclamation. Pakenham notes that whilst Buller was opposed to farm burning, Roberts was not. He records that although many in the British army were also in favour, there were those who were shocked by the tactics. All however had been surprised at the attitude of "Sister Boer", who, though left destitute on the farms, indicated, when asked, that they would encourage their men to go on fighting. "Some of the more intelligent British officers were disturbed and impressed. They had never seen anything before quite like this 'big, primitive' kind of patriotism." Thomas Pakenham. THE BOER WAR, p. 441. The burning of houses was an aspect of the war that was to bedevil SA politics for the remainder of the century "…maar die verwoesting van huise…was nie geregverdig nie…" F.W. de Klerk, quoted in VERSKROEIDE AARDE / F. Pretorius, p. 54.  Of interest is the term "principal civil residents" implying Boer rather than black inhabitants of the area. Once the farm burning had begun, the British were faced with the problem of what to do with the women and children and those who had lived on the farms. Their solution was the concentration camps. See illustration.

WINBURG CONCENTRATION CAMP

320     Winburg Concentration Camp. 5 photographs taken by the photographer Hermann Oppenheim on 15/4/1902. Some slight water damage not affecting images. All photographs 15,5 x 20,5 cm mounted on stiff card , 25 x 30.5 cm.  1. Camp superintendant's hut with four men outside, and flapping Union Jack visible. 2. Group of 21 men and nurses outside same mud and brick hut. Camp staff? Includes the four men in first photograph. 3. Arrival of mule drawn wagon outside same hut with rows of bell tents in the background and clear fence line going up the koppie behind the camp. On the mules one can see Boer children (mostly shoeless). There is no evidence of soldiers. There is washing visible on another fence in the background. 4. Close view of three [storage?] tents. These tents are bigger than the bell tents in the background. One looks as though it could be used as a dining tent. 5.Interesting view of a "street" in the camp, lined with bell tents and with inhabitants (men, women and children), standing and sitting on the edge of the street. A cobbled path is in the middle of the street and cobbled paths lead to each tent. Of interest is the good condition of the clothes worn, and the number of young men present.
