Eaton emerged during
the 1940s and 1950s as one of South Africa's foremost modern architects. His
work, mainly in the then Transvaal, was both contemporary and uniquely relevant
to its South African setting. His designs embraced elements of African design
(for example he frequently used stonework). His themes were not expanded upon
by other architects as South Africa entered the apartheid era.

LETTERS TO A DAUGHTER. Johannesburg:
Taurus, 1991.

p. Paperback. R 250
Between 1976 and 1982
Mosiuoa Lekota spent time in his Robben Island prison cell formulating the story
of the struggle he and his comrades were engaged in, so that their children
would understand what they fought and stood for, and why they were imprisoned.
He wanted their children to understand what had motivated them to protest
against and resist the policies of apartheid, so that "our generation may
bequeath unto yours, and subsequent generations, a country and a world endowed
with the maximum potential for progress" [p. 203]. The letters were
completed during his last period of trial and detention, from June 1985 to
December 1989, as accused number 20 in the first of the "Delmas Treason
Trials". They were published without fanfare and then disappeared from
view. They deserve to be reprinted.

Walton traces the
development of folk building throughout South Africa. "He has followed the
opening up of the country and describes the homesteads which characterise each
region. Ornate gabled houses, fortified frontier homesteads, hardbieshuise and
even the kakabeenwa… The interior of the house…also provides a rich store of
surviving folk culture. " Flyleaf.

A useful tool in understanding the social and political geography of our region. Contends that the complex nature of social identity rather than racial differences explain the choices South Africans make in life.

Born in Hamburg in
1821, Barth embarked on an academic career, with a particular interest in the
ancient world. After a grand tour of the Mediterranean coast in 1845-7 (for
which he learnt Italian and Arabic), he developed a taste for travel. Coupled
with disappointment in his academic advancement, this led to his being part of
an English expedition to Central Africa, under the leadership of James
Richardson. He compiled these journals of his travels together with uncompleted
volumes on Central African vocabularies. "A more intelligent,
indefatigable, trustworthy and resolute traveller than Dr Barth can rarely be
found" was the tribute paid on his death by the President of the Royal
Geographical Society.

can be considered in any way as a guide for men about to visit the interior of
South Africa in search of sport."

The first volume
contains the narrative of the campaign up to the arrival of Lord Roberts and
the commencement of the forward movement. The second volume comprises accounts
of the sieges of Kimberley, Wepenar and Ladysmith; the relieving of the three
towns, the surrender of Cronje and the occupation of Bloemfontein. The third
volume concerns the rebellion in the Cape Colony, the advance from
Bloemfontein, to Kimberley, to Kroonstad, the defence and relief of Mafeking,
operations in the western Transvaal, northern Natal and Orange River Colony,
ending in November 1900. The fourth and final volume commences with Lord
Kitchener’s assumption of the position of commander-in-chief, ending with the
termination of the campaign. "From December 1900 to May 1902 was waged
incessantly guerilla warfare of the purest type and on the most extensive scale
between an army of 195 400 men on the one side and of 30 000 to 50 000 men on
the other. The contest was remarkable in many respects, but in none, perhaps,
more than its duration… the Boer forces were already beaten, inasmuch as their
cause was irretrievably lost, their long-sustained effort to ward off the end
requires some military explanation." Preface to vol. 4.
"In the decade after 1902, the public
suffered a barrage of Boer War books. This culminated in a bombardment from the

HISTORY OF THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA, (1906-1910) edited by General Maurice and
