Col. Breytenbach
became a legendary figure in the old South African army. Although Breytenbach
claimed no political affiliations, his feelings about the war are clear and he
took delight in the success achieved by the composite force he had moulded
(with difficulty) in their battles with SWAPO and MPLA forces. Breytenbach's
force, 32 "Buffalo" Battalion, was used to spearhead the SA drive
into Angola and during Operation Savannah in 1975, it was 32 Battalion reaching
Novo Redondo just south of Luando that raised the spectre of SA "taking
over" Angola, alarming European and American governments. Breytenbach's
books are valuable since he does not attempt to hide problems in supply and
staffing and the conflicts he had with senior SA military staff, who did not
like his unconventional modus operandi (or his success!) He also provides graphic
evidence of the confusion that existed in Angola in the period after 1974,
where UNITA changed sides and you often had to question people you came across
to determine whether they were friend or foe!

The focus of the
Select Committee which reported in 1836 fell heavily on the Cape. The negative
perceptions created in England due to the frontier war that had recently taken
place led to a harsher attitude being taken by the Cape Governor. This led in
turn to increased dissatisfaction amongst farmers in the frontier areas, and
the initial movements away from the Cape which came to be known as the Great
Trek.

Marais was first and
foremost a naturalist, living with his subjects for a number of years and
closely observing their behaviour, which he documented in detail. He said of
his study of baboons: "I lived among a troop of wild baboons for three
years. I followed them on their daily excursions; slept among them, fed them,
learned to know each one individually: taught them to trust me and love me- and
also to hate me so violently that my life was several times in danger".

The withdrawal of the
Portuguese from Angola in 1974 left a power vacuum which was filled by three
Angolan forces: MPLA, FNLA and UNITA.
South Africa forces, in an attempt to secure the northern border of (then) SWA
pushed deep into Angola in 1975. Operation Savannah lasted until March 1976,
when SA forces had to withdraw. During Operation Savannah, SA soldiers had
heavy censorship imposed on them and local SA newspapers were not allowed to
carry detailed reports of the fighting, although international papers did.
Savannah convinced the Botha government of the need to improve SA armaments and
ushered in a period of intense military growth. This enabled the SADF to fight
longer and more intense battles in Southern Angola in 1978 (operations
Reindeer, Revenge & Sceptic) and during the 1980's. It also taught the SADF
hierarchy not to trust the politicians who they felt had bowed to international
pressure. Savannah was controversial in SA (35 SADF soldiers were killed) and
in an attempt to allay fears, the Defence Force commissioned two histories via
the shadowy Brigadier Willem Otto, head of the Military Information Bureau, of
which this is one. [The other being Sophia du Preez's AVONTUUR IN ANGOLA].

Taylor's first book.
Known to the popular press of his day as "The Mighty Nimrod," Selous
achieved world fame as much for his hunting exploits as for his ability to
recount them in print and through lectures. He came into contact with many of
the outstanding figures of his time, including Theodore Roosevelt, C.J. Rhodes
and Lobengula and explored Mashonaland (present day Zimbabwe). During WWI, he
joined the British Army in East Africa in participating in the campaign against
Von Lettow-Vorbeck, and was killed by a sniper's bullet in 1917. See illustration.

Bevan stresses that
the enormous German sacrifices in WWI would lead to bitterness within the
country unless some positive result could be shown. Since German claims to land
in Europe would be heavily contested, he suggested creating a large colony,
Mittel-Afrika, incorporating colonies from Belgium, Portugal and France which
were run (in his view) inefficiently, to be run by Germans (efficiently) for
the benefit of Germany.

The first volume
contains the narrative of the campaign up to the arrival of Lord Roberts and
the commencement of the forward movement. The second volume comprises accounts
of the sieges of Kimberley, Wepenar and Ladysmith; the relieving of the three
towns, the surrender of Cronje and the occupation of Bloemfontein. The third
volume concerns the rebellion in the Cape Colony, the advance from
Bloemfontein, to Kimberley, to Kroonstad, the defence and relief of Mafeking,
operations in the western Transvaal, northern Natal and Orange River Colony, ending
in November 1900. The fourth and final volume commences with the assumption of
the commander-in-chief by Lord Kitchener to the termination of the campaign. In
this phase. "From Decemebr 1900 to May 1902 was waged incessantly guerilla
warfare of the purest type and on the most extensive scale between an army of
195 400 men on the one side and of 30 000 to 50 000 men on the other. The
contest was remarkable in many respects, but in none, perhaps, more than its
duration… the Boer forces were already beaten, inasmuch as their cause was
irretrievably lost, their long-sustained effort to ward off the end requires
some military explanation." Preface to vol. 4. "In the decade after
1902, the public suffered a barrage of Boer War books. This culminated in a
bombardment from the Long Toms, as it were: the seven-volume TIMES HISTORY OF
THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA (1900-1909), edited by Leo Amery, and the eight-volume
(OFFICIAL) HISTORY OF THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA, (1906-1910) edited by General
Maurice and others. These two works have dominated Boer War studies and will
remain indespensible to the historian. They incorporate, often anonymously, a
vast mass of original material." Thomas Pakenham. THE BOER WAR, p. xv.
