1          Agricola, Georgius & Hoover, Herbert Clark. DE RE METALLICA [by] Georgius Agricola; translated from the first Latin edition of 1556 with biographical introduction, annotations and appendices upon the development of mining methods, metallurgical processes, geology, mineralogy & mining law from the earliest times to the 16th century by Herbert Clark Hoover and Lou Henry Hoover. London: The Mining Magazine, 1912.

xxxi, 640 p.: ill. (chiefly woodcuts). Folio. Vellum over boards with raised bands, some discolouration. Bookplate on front endpaper.                                         R 7500

Agricola was born in Saxony in 1494. In 1544 he began work on a series of books relating to physical geology, subterranean waters and gases, a systematic mineralogy, a history of metals and topographical mineralogy, and a glossary of Latin and German  mineralogical and metallurgical terms. This collection of books is regarded as one of the earliest relevant to technology of the modern era. Hoover became the 31st president of the United States, serving for the years 1929-1933, having begun his career as a gold miner. Hoover and his wife Lou Henry met at Stanford University and worked on the translation  over a period of five years, puzzling out Agricola's processes and constructions through scientific detective work in the small chemical laboratories set up in their various houses. This translation was published for private circulation in 1912, replicating the detailed woodcuts and binding of the original. See Godfrey, D. THE ENCHANTED DOOR, p. 75-77. See rear cover.

2          [Independent Electoral Commission]. AN END TO WAITING: the story of South Africa's elections, 26 April to 6 May 1994; editors Paul Bell [and] Rian de Villiers; writers Paul Bell [and] Pat Schwartz; photographic editor, Paul Weinberg. Johannesburg: The Commission, 1995.

128 p.: ill. (chiefly ports.). 4to. Cloth, some staining along spine, d.w. with faint crease. Presentation label laid down on front free endpaper: "Presented to the Minister of Environment Affairs Dr D.J. de Villiers in commemoration of the elections of April 1994".           R 950

In April 1994 South Africa held its first fully democratic election. 19 726 610 citizens voted at 10 500 voting stations across the world. The process was overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission, headed by Judge Johann Kriegler. This book was published a year later and gives an overview of an event which must rank as one of the cornerstones of the new South Africa. It reminds the reader of the burden borne by the Commission and the pressure they experienced before the election could be declared "substantially free and fair". The title refers both to the years of waiting for a truly democratic country, and to the patience of South Africans as they queued for hours to cast their votes. A marvellous account with photographs that vividly depict the confusion, tolerance, pain, pride and pleasure South Africa experienced before the eyes of the world during the voting process. Dawie de Villiers, a past Springbok captain, served in both Mr de Klerk's cabinet and in Mr Mandela's Government of National Unity. See illustration.

The Carnegie Commission arose out of a visit by the President and Secretary of the Carnegie Corporation of New York to South Africa in 1927. The Dutch Reformed Church requested support for an investigation into the "poor white" question. The Corporation agreed and took responsibility for the costs involved as well as arranging for two American sociologists to participate in the study. This study could be considered relevant to today's South Africa, with large numbers of people moving from the rural areas to urban areas in an attempt to escape poverty; and the conditions they live under as a result. South Africa's new democratic society is also in transition from a patriarchal society to a modern one, as was Afrikaner society at the time of the report.
